Challenger 180 SCIC Review in TrailerBoats

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C180 215 hp SCIC tested in April 2005 issue!
Top speed 46.4 mph. Best cruise at 28.1 mph, 6000 RPM, 8.8 GPH, 3.2 MPG, range 60 miles. WOT GPH is 19.4, giving a range of only 45 miles.
Notable comments in the article:
They test drove the 185 hp version, but did no hard numbers. Their comment was that it was "a boat lacking zest". That sounds polite, doesn't it?
Engine access reportedly good, but not a lot of details given in regards to storage capacity.
Deep 31 inch freeboard at the helm. So deep that visibility was slightly limited. SeaDoo supposedly will raise the seat height.
0-30 time with two adults on board is 6.1 seconds.
For comparison, the article pointed out that the top speeds of 190 hp stern drive 18 foot Baja and Monterey boats tested was about 52 mph, but C180 acceleration "appears to be a bit better".
SCIC tested boat lists at $21,999, with the optional tower adding another $2400 list.
Overall tone of the article, in my opinion, was factual, approving, few nitpicks, but not very enthusiastic.
My opinion of the boat:
Looks nice and has plenty of usable cockpit space for it's size. Holds two to three more people than the 16.6 foot Speedster, with only 13 inches more length.
The power sounds like it is adequate and no more. The old C1800 outperformed it with any engine combination, Rotax or Merc. With 4 or 5 adults in the boat, I wonder whether it could even pull up a slalom skier. A wakeboarder, maybe yes, but not a slalom.
6.1 second 0-30 time is what my old 14.5 foot Sportster did with 85 horsepower.
The small fuel tank and short range is unacceptable. At 34 mph, the range using 90 percent of your fuel is only 52 miles, or 1.5 hours. Just unacceptable. By comparison, a Speedster200's range, as reported by the same magazine, is 108 miles at 34 mph, and the mpg is 3.0 compared to the C180's 2.8! A Speedster 200 w/310 uses less fuel at 34 mph than a C180?
The wrap around plastic "windshields" look like an obvious grab point for someone standing on a dock holding the boat. Are they strong enough for that purpose?
Swim deck and overall stern design looks very tidy and usefull.
!!!!!!!! Don't mean to offend anyone who likes or has purchased this boat. It has ovbvious good points and will serve may users well.
